From the amount I scoot off travelling, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to presume that i don’t much like this country. but i do! a lot. and i only wanna discover more and more of it in the not too distant future. here are few photos from the Take a view – Landscape Photographer of the Year award which was on the bbc website and only made me want to do my discovering even more and even sooner.

Jamie’s Italian, Kingston, London

Since I started my new job i haven’t been treated to many free lunches. So last Friday’s trip to Jamie’s italian came as a welcome surprise.

If you haven’t been, here’s a quick idea of what it’s like. Busy and sprawling round every corner and corridor, it’s got a laid back feel and seems to be frequented by well off women and their kids. Not that I think that’s a bad thing, i like a bit of life in my restaurants. one of my dining partners described it as the new Carluccio’s, a high street, mid priced italian.

And to be honest i didn’t think it was too bad. the selection of italian breads that we shared to start wasn’t anything to write home about and nor was the brownie i had for desert (not very italian i know, but i seem to have chosen tiramisu a bit too often recently). To be perfectly honest the ribeye steak with gorgonzola wasn’t brilliant either, but it certainly wasn’t bad. The meat was tastey, if a bit stringey, but i guess it ain’t the finest cut is it. One thing here – sort your steak knives out, they need a point not a curved end. The chips were great, which might not sound like much but it’s surpirsing how many places get them wrong.

But i think i’m being a bit negative on a meal i didn’t really mind at all. Others had spag bol (“If they can’t get that right…” and it seems they did) and the seabass special (which again didn’t go down badly. I wish I had chosen the tiramisu, which two others had, and looked light and appealing.

So to end on a high. Service was great and i discovered a new red (always a plus for me).

Now I’m not really up on my Italian’s red or white but i discovered a little gem on Friday. Montepulciano D’Abruzzo 2008 Gran Sasso. Rich and fruity it held itself against a strong cheese sauce while being more than drinkable on its own. Really fruity, deep and quite sweet and after a quick search on the internet, cheapest price £6.35 from www.slurp.co.uk Worth it i’d say.

Would i go back? Yes, just not in a hurry.
